Forest and Farm Camp

Join us this summer for a week of nature adventures, wilderness skills, games and challenges to grow our awareness and connection of the wild world. Youth between 7 – 13 years old will learn about plants, mammals, tracking, birds, and survival skills. These lessons are presented in ways that nurture common sense, problem-solving, community and team building, authentic communication, gratitude, reverence for the natural world and respect.

Our mornings will begin with welcome stations that include higher-energy games and a nature museum with field guides, feathers, and plaster casts of animal tracks to explore. Once everyone has arrived we will host an opening circle and share a story to frame the day. Then campers break into age-specific groups, where they will spend the day wandering, crafting, doing activities related to the theme of the day, or engaging with whatever magic and mystery the forest provides, to end with a final closing circle to share stories of the day.

This camp at Jardins Carya is a new program and we are VERY excited for it. Our partners on this private farm are passionate about bringing quality organic food to the community. As well as our usual activities, we will integrate some stewardship and participation in the organic farm. We will also have the chance to do some wilderness skills activities we can’t do in city parks, such as: working on stick shelters that we can leave up, stewardship projects on the land, and various activities going off trail.

What’s so unique about your camps?

Immersed in Nature All Day

Spending the entire day outdoors is a monumental boost for our body’s health and overall well-being. It also fosters personal resilience and teaches us the art of being truly comfortable outdoors. As we delve deeply into understanding the magic of a particular ecosystem, we forge more profound connections with nature, community and self.

Small Camper-to-Guide Ratios

We maintain a small ratio of campers to guides, giving a greater opportunity to form close connections with each participant. Typically, there is one guide for every six kids, supplemented by the help of teen Counselors-in-training. This approach enables us to provide personalized attention, foster a supportive environment and adapt to the passions and gifts of the groups.

Weekly visits from indigenous knowledge keepers

Our program is enriched by weekly visits from Kanien’kehaka knowledge keepers who have collaborated with us for many years. These visits add a rich dimension to our exploration of the land. Participants not only learn words from the Kanien’keha language but also gain insights into inspiring cultural practices. These sessions cover age-appropriate topics related to history, current issues, and visions for the future, creating a meaningful and empowering experience. Activities range from storytelling and dancing to playing lacrosse, all contributing to a deeper connection with the land.

Experienced staff

Our staff members are not your average summer camp leaders; they are educators with expertise in ecology, camping, mentoring, and non-violent communication. They bring creative leadership to the table. There will always be a staff member present with Wilderness First Aid training to ensure safety.

Dynamic Learning Atmosphere

A blend of singing, storytelling, and crafts such as weaving and woodcarving creates a dynamic learning environment. Our days are spent engaging in exciting challenges, active games and fun projects, while also carving out moments for silent reflection and nature observation, catering to various learning styles and providing a holistic educational experience.

Closing Celebration

Parents are invited to join a closing activity with their children on the Friday of camp, an hour earlier than usual. During this time, our staff celebrates the unique qualities and gifts of each participant, offering parents a glimpse into the experiences and lessons their children have lived. While attendance is not mandatory, this shared experience can be profoundly meaningful for families.

Discovering Urban Green Spaces

Explore our city’s urban green spaces like never before! Encounter snapping turtles, owls, hawks, foxes, turkeys, and learn about real hazards such as poisonous plants and how to handle them. There is a wealth of natural beauty just outside your door. We’ll develop relationships with individual wild species, making the understanding of wild nature both personal and practical.

Are your activities in accordance to the By-law?

All our activities are adapted to be in complete accordance with the By-law concerning parks under the jurisdiction of the city council of the city of Montréal. We invite you to learn the rules specific to the Montreal parks you like to spend time in with your family. Following these by-laws we will all be doing our part to support the ecological health and safety of our precious wild spaces.
